Stick Brands
There are many things to take into consideration when buying a new hockey stick. Especially when one is buying a very first stick, there are many important things to think about before making the final decision of which one to buy. While brands have much to do with pricing, there is little other reason to use the brand of a given stick as a deciding factor on which one to ultimately buy. The bottom line is that children and amateurs need a stick that is going to allow them to grow as a player and encourage them to stick with it.
The things that should be considered are what material to choose for your stick and what kind of blade the stick has. When it concerns materials, the bottom line for amateurs is that wood is going to allow the best performance and it is much cheaper than composite sticks. On the other hand, wooden sticks do not hold up that well. So while a wooden stick may allow optimum performance and the best opportunities for learning and performing, a wooden stick is not going to be with you for years to come. Only if you play hockey once a year does a wooden stick have a remote chance of surviving a number of years of ownership.

Wooden Sticks
The alternatives to wooden sticks are great in terms of the technology that is being used to make modern hockey sticks. On the one hand, modern composite sticks are very durable, much more durable than their wooden counterparts; however, their engineered composition comes with a much higher price tag, which can make many parents of beginners blanch at the sight. Especially when all of the other costs of equipment are considered, the idea of spending money for stick brands is superfluous. Stick brands change the price of the sticks considerably, but don’t necessarily make your child a better player. In fact, wooden sticks are better for beginning players to learn with.
If you are considering buying one of the top stick brands for a child who is whining about having to have that one particular stick from a particular brand, take a good hard look at the other equipment and show your child some of the price tags. Then explain the advantage of wooden sticks and tell your child that their stick brand might not be the most popular, but it’s probably the best performing stick on any given amateur arena.
